Notes about the SGP ARM Central Facility

  • There is a coal-fired power plant to the South East.
  • There is another plant to the North-West that produces black carbon aerosol.
  • They burn the fields periodically surrounding the site.
  • They spray the adjacent fields periodically with Roundup.

  • ORCAS (GV) test flight on Jan 5, 2016. Closest approach at 3:08 CST (21:08 UTC).
  • AirCore flights planned for the week of April 13, 2015. None flown.
  • AirCore flights Sept 16 and 17, 2014.
  • AirCore flights Feb 26 and 27, 2014.
  • SEAC4RS flight over Lamont on September 6, 2013. DC8 (1800-38000ft)+ER2 (41000-61000ft)+Cessna (0-16000ft).
  • Two AirCore launches occurred on July 23 and 24, 2013.
  • The NASA DC-8 flew a spiral over Lamont around 3:30 pm PDT on May 25, 2012 as part of the DC3 campaign.
  • Two Aircore launches occurred on Jan 14, 2012, landing at 3 pm CST, and two launches occurred on Jan 15, landing at 10 am CST.
  • A HIPPO 4 missed approach of Ponca City airport is planned for June 9, 2011. Missed approach occurred at 4:25 pm CDT.
  • CARVE overflights occurred over the SGP on the mornings of Friday, June 3 and Sunday, June 5, 2011.
  • A DC-8 spiral (run by Ed Browell) over the SGP was completed on July 18, 2010. The spiral began at 1335 CDT, and spanned 250 ft (76 m) to 40 kft (12.2 km). On board were three remote CO2 laser sensors (ITT, JPL, & GSFC),two continuous in situ sensors (Stephanie Vay's AVOCET in situ CO2 sensor and Randy Kawa's Picarro sensor (initial test flight)) and Sebastien's PCP/PFP flask sampling system.
  • HIPPO-3 Test Flight 2 occurred over the Ponca City airport (missed approach) at 13:35 CDT (18:35 UTC) March 18, 2010.
  • A HIPPO-2 overflight occurred on October 20, 2009.
  • A two-week-long aircraft campaign occurred over Lamont between July 27 - August 10. There were overflights on July 31, August 2, August 3, August 4 and August 5, 2009.
  • A missed approach with the HIPPO aircraft occurred between 20:30 and 21:00 UTC, Jan 30, 2009. The aircraft came into the Ponca City airport and immediately took off again.
